penpal

Letters are the oldest form of connection. The greatest stories in history unfolded through letters.

Before the inbox, before the feed, before the notification that tells you someone somewhere tapped a heart at your life, there was the letter.

penpal is your invitation to write to a stranger and, in doing so, find your way back to yourself.

If you are drowning in digital noise and craving something slower. If you want to find yourself on a page. If you are suffering from an all-consuming crush or AI-induced brainfog. If you are struggling with loneliness or estrangement. If you don’t communicate with your family because of political disagreements or just good old-fashioned toxicity and inter-relational drama… this is for you.

Write about your life. Your questions. What you’re afraid of. What you love. The weather. The light coming through your window. Whatever feels like you in the now moment.

all you need is a pen, a sheet of paper, an envelope, a stamp & the desire to write

find your penpal

Your email will be visible to others on this page so they can reach you. Your postal address is never collected here — you share that privately with your penpal once you’ve connected.

how penpal works

Add your name, where you are in the world, and a little about yourself. Browse the list until someone catches your attention… a city you’ve always been curious about, a sentence that sounds warm, a stranger whom you’d like to swap stories with.

Then email them. Introduce yourself. If they write back, exchange addresses, and begin.

That’s it. No matching algorithm. Just a few gentle guidelines:

  • Be a real person. Write what’s actually true for you, not a performance of yourself.
  • Respond if someone reaches out, even if just to say you’ve already found a penpal. A reply is a kindness.
  • Take your time. Letters are an antidote to urgency culture.

This list is tended but not moderated. Be kind and respectful.

Is this really free?

Yes. Though it will cost you something. Showing up. Being open. Writing. That’s the currency here, and what really matters.

Who is this for?

Anyone who wants to write and be written to. All ages, all genders, all corners of the world. If you’re reading this, probably you.

Do I have to write by hand?

No rules here, but I recommend it. Something happens when pen meets paper. Something slows down. Something opens.

How often do I have to write?

As often as you both like. Every penpal relationship has its own rhythm.

What if no one picks me?

They will. And while you wait, write to someone first. That’s usually the best way to start.

Can I have more than one penpal?

Yes. Fill your life with correspondents. Become someone’s favourite thing to find in the letterbox.

What do I write about?

Anything. Everything. Start with the weather if you need to. You’ll find your way to the real stuff soon enough.

What if I have a question, concern, query?

Write to me. I’m at studio@viendamaria.com. I read all of my emails.

What if I get a bad feeling about someone?

Trust it completely. Your instincts are the only moderator here. You don’t owe anyone your address, your time, or your inner world.

How do we delete ourselves from it when we don’t want to be on the list anymore?

Either ask me to delete your name or delete yourself from the hard sheet where it all lives. (Being careful not to delete anyone else :)
