| hello. there’s an old greek story about the muses that i keep thinking about. before there were nine of them, there was Mnemosyne. the goddess of memory. she gave birth to the muses, who were said to bring poetry, music, dance, history, and astronomy. love that memory comes first. because most of what we make comes from somewhere we’ve already been. something we saw. something we lost. something we loved. something we couldn’t quite get over. a question that keeps following us around. a feeling we don’t have words for yet. our lives are full of material. but the strange thing about making something from it is that you can’t really stay on the surface. you have to go in. and going in means meeting the parts of yourself you’d probably rather leave alone. the fear of being seen. the fear that it won’t be good. the fear that nobody will care. the fear that everybody will. the part of you that would rather keep the beautiful idea safely inside your head than risk discovering what happens when you make it real. this is the part nobody really tells you about creativity. you think you’re making the work. but the work is also making you. it asks you to become braver. more honest. less attached to getting it right. more willing to be changed by what you find. i think, generally, that we don’t need another idea. we need somewhere to go and meet the one we already have. somewhereto sit down. to return.to keep going. to be around other people who are also trying to bring something from inside themselves into the light. that’s why i made MUSES. to give your making a place. you bring whatever is alive for you. the essay. the book. the business. the half-formed idea. the thing you keep saying you’ll get to. we sit together. and we work. you are your own muse. but you don’t have to make everything alone. join MUSES this september. come bring your thing writing this from my friend’s sofa and a view of the top of the Eiffel Tower. with love,Vienda |
you have to go in
